Medicine is a Bandaid- Nutrition is a Cure
There’s an old saying from Hippocrates that basically says, “What medicine does not heal, the fire cures.” If medicine didn’t work back then, burning it out was an option. Medicine is a lot more reliable today than it was in his time and we definitely don’t suggest burning yourself. But medicine back then was going out in the field and picking herbs, today it is billions of dollars in yearly commerce. They don’t want want fire, they don’t want the cure, they want customers.
Today, your fire and cure is your own personal nutrition. First of all, there’s no greater medicine than a good regiment of diet and exercise. The luxury of modern living is weakening the average person and our food system is far too fat with sugar, carbs, and other harmful, but tasty, substances. We work less, we walk less, heck, we even talk less! Get outside! Walk the dog! Take your loved ones somewhere fun!
Healthcare cost would have never been a problem if we didn’t become so reliant on the economy of medicine. We stay inside looking at other people’s wonderful lives so we need depression medicine. We eat twinkies and chips so we need cholesterol pills. We stare blankly at televisions for hours and need painkillers for back soreness. We eat lots of meat and bread and our fruits and vegetables come out of cans. The American Dream is looking more like a nightmare!
So what do you do? Get out! Go to the gym once or twice a week, or even just start walking. Change your diet. If it has corn syrup or food coloring or fizzes when you drink it, don’t drink it! If it counts for 30% of your daily fat or can sit on your shelf and not age, don’t eat it! Water and fresh food is a fire that cures.
Even a good diet may not be enough. God made a universe full of minerals and nutrients and our bodies need a surprising amount of them. Often those with even the best health intentions miss out on several key components to optimal living. But a simple multivitamin may not be enough. God has also made each one of his children uniquely different and special. There simply can’t be a single vitamin formula that works for all of us.
Instead, supplement your life according to your greatest needs. Many of us are in different stages of life or face different pains and aches. If you have problems with swelling and inflammation, start taking MSM. If you or your family have a history such as heart disease, take supplements that bolster that part of your body. If you are reaching later stages in your life, your bones may need more attention. Proper nutrition with considered supplementation will extend your life far longer than the bandaid of a medicine industry that has no interest in your personal longevity.
