What is MSM?
MSM is an abbreviation of methylsulfonylmethane, an organic sulfur compound composed of the following molecules: (CH3)2SO2. A colorless, crystalline solid, it is chemically inert. In nature, it is found inside primitive plants, floating in the atmosphere above marine areas, and even in humans.
Origins and Properties
Given its chemical properties, it is a stable mineral. Lab studies show that rats could consume 2 grams per kilogram of body weight without any adverse effects, showing it is completely safe to consume on a regular, long-term basis. The official lethal dosage is 17.5 grams per kilogram of body weight so unless you decide to eat a bowl of MSM (about half a pound), it is harmless.
MSM is actually found in blood and spine fluids, meaning the human body finds it useful. It likely derives from the decomposition of our food by intestinal metabolism. It has also been proven to cross the blood/brain barrier, which shows it is quite safe if our minds will allow it to enter freely. Not many chemicals are allowed across that barrier.
Fact and Fiction
A common misconception is that sulfur is bad for your body because of the documentaries of sulfur mines and people’s media exposure to sulfuric acid. However, sulfur is the third most abundant mineral in the body, existing in your muscles, skin and bones.
While the FDA has cautioned over-emphasis on it being a cure-all which they do to everything, commercial versions of MSM have been granted the FDA status of GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database keeps a frequently updated list of MSM health studies.

I use MsM lotion everyday. I love it! It is really good to use as face cream as well.
